Arlanda Jets - Carlstad Crusaders, Pinbacken 7 maj, klockan 15.00
The Superseries for the 2005 Arlanda Jets will kick off this Saturday at 15.00 at Pinbacken. The Jets will play the always-powerful Carlstad Crusaders. The Crusaders are coming of two wins in the EFAF Cup tournament. The have beaten the NFA Monarchs of Copenhagen, Denmark and the Eidsvoll 1814 of Norway. The Crusaders have shown that they are an explosive offensive team and still the very tough and physical defensive team they have been in the past. It should be a very exciting game.
Arlanda Jets Offensive Preview:
QB and Receiving corp.
For Arlanda, there are a lot of new faces. One in particular is that of Luis Gonzalez. Arlanda has invested in an American quarterback for the first time in many years. Luis has proven that he is a good leader and a quality choice for the Jets. Joining the new faces on offense will be Abdel Mainou Seidou, formally of Örebro Black Knights. Abbe will be seeing action on both sides of the ball and kick returning. Also, new in the receiver crew will be Chris Stephens. Chris has played with the Solna Chiefs the last 3 years and has demonstrated good hands and the potential to catch the deep ball. Anchoring down the rest of the receiving crew will be Nick Elman, Per Larsson, Magnus Lagerborn and a new young talent Robin Bergqvist. Another newcomer to the receiver crew is TE Pouria Vassei. PV, as he is called, serves both as a WR and TE and has shown good hands and blocking abilities in the practices.
Hobbit Crew North
At the Running back positions there will be two very familiar faces. Stefan Axelsson and Johan Winberg. Stefan has been running the show on offense in years past and will play a key role in the running and passing game for the Jets. Johan Winberg is maybe one of the best overall backs in Sweden. He has great instincts running the ball and is maybe one of the best receivers on the team. The back ups at the RB position are: Micke Öhman, who has proven an effective runner and also receiver, Dennis Valdez who was impressive on a few carries in the scrimmage against the Helsinki Roosters. Matthias Jangenäs is only two years into his football career, but keep an eye out for this guy as the season continues.
The Few, The Proud - The Offensive Line
The offensive line is literally like the "Marines." They are the few and the proud. The three old bulls: Fredrik Flyghed, Jonas Renström and Björn Strandberg anchor the position. Joining this crew will be Robert Kostic, who is returning to his mother club. Also new young lineman, Victor Hermansson, who has really developed into a solid young player. The back ups on the OL are few and young but we hope they can develop as the season goes on. There maybe a comeback by a "talented" old player on the OL this year. He has taken some reps in practice over the past two weeks and been somewhat impressive despite his age. Only time will tell what the future holds.
Who is Tubby Raymond and what does Buck Sweep mean?
On offensive the Jets will show a different style than has been seen in the past. With the addition of Luis Gonzalez and the development of the receiver corps, the Jets will throw the ball. The passing game has been developing and we will throw. And of course, I like the fact that the better we throw; the better we will be at running the ball. But remember, Never say "never" and "buck sweep" in the same sentence.
Arlanda Jets Defensive Preview:
The Wall of Orange
The Jets defense has been experimenting with new looks using the same philosophy: "Bring it and Cover it!" That is what the defense will be doing. We were a little set back by the lose (for now) of Jermaine Smith. But that just meant that a few more guys would have to put in time on both sides of the ball, which is nothing new to the Jets.
The Dark Side of the Force
The old bulls of the OL will anchor the Jets DL. Flyghed and Renström will put in their time as DL while they will be flanked by some speed in the likes of Daniel Lundqvist and Aris Sanchez. Newcomer Niklas Lindroth will back up along with Abbe Mainou Seidou at the defensive ends position.
Are they coming or covering?
The always solid Kristoffer Blank and Andreas Öström will anchor the LB crew. Joining the two old dependables will be Joakim Jonsson, a young and very talented linebacker and new face, Soheil Golestani, from the Solna Chiefs. Also on the LB crew will be Robert Svanemyr and Jesper Hesselgren.
Black Hawks
A familiar face from Jets offensive history will lead the secondary. Stefan Axelsson will be leading a crew of both young and old talented secondary defenders. Michael Christiansen and Kim Lundgren will take the corner positions. Last years U-19 Qb, Joakim "Texas Hold 'Em" Hilding will anchor down the FS position. Antti Stenroos will join him from the secondary of the 2003 SM-Mästare. Another young face will be that of Tobias Petersson who will see a lot of time at different positions in the Jets defensive backfield, and maybe the offensive backfield of the the opponents.
On the opponents:
Taking on the Crusaders
As stated earlier the Crusaders are off to a great start in the EFAF Cup. The won the first game easily and had an important and impressive come from behind game to qualify for the Semi-Finals in that tournament. The new American QB, Jay Reed, leads the Crusader offense. He has shown a good arm and outstanding running ability in their first two games. He has a wide variety of choices in his receivers and two very good running backs to hand the ball two.
When it comes to stopping the Crusaders in comes down to making sure you can stop - the run, the pass, the draw, the screen - and watch the reverse.
Coach Larsson has done a good job putting a very good group of offensive players on the field, forcing the opponents defenses to play very good and sound football.
The defense is lead by the defensive line. Per Rindberg and Carl Carlsson are very good players and will likely force the Qb into quick decisions. Getting the ball moving against that front will be a key to success for the Jets. In the secondary, the Crusaders are a mix of young and old players. They have done a good job in containing receivers and limiting yards after catch. Working match ups will be a key for the Jets offense.
