NFA Monarchs vs Carlstad Crusaders, Hvidovre stadium Saturday April 23rd at 12.00
A new season begins on Saturday when the Crusaders open against the Monarchs in Denmark. There’s some new faces on the Carlstad team for the 2005 season; New head coach, new defensive coordintor and a bunch of new players. For the first time in almost five years the Crusaders will line up with an American quarterback under the center. Jay Reed is in the driver seat now and have a couple of weeks under his belt in the new system. He is quick and fast with a strong arm. Former quarterback Johan Larsson will move around and will still be a big part of the offense. In Johan Perlström and Johan Ingerman we have two new additions at the receiver position and they will contribute with their big play ability. When Kalle Flognman comes back from rehab his back this group will be the best in Sweden. In the backfield the Crusaders will miss their big fullback Joakim Holm who’s playing in the NFL Europe with Rhein Fire. Workhorse Christian Forsman will carry the load and don’t have to share time with now retired Rikard Borg. Forsman seams to get better as the games goes along.
On defense, the young and talented Calle Ingerman who was on the All-star team as a linebacker in the European Junior Championships in Moscow last year will anchor the middle. Defensive leader Per Rindberg will make sure that no one plays under his ability. Athletes like Martin Ullbrant and Carl Carlsson will make plays with their speed and defensive American, Nick Fertitta, will move around and be a force wherever he lines up. The sack leader in the Superserien 2000 Stefan Hagdahl is back and it will be interesting to see what he can do.
The Monarchs are a good and solid team. They have no weaknesses and don’t make a lot of mistakes. On offense they are a true “West coast” team and their receiver corps match up with the Crusaders and also have big play potential. Their defense has good team speed and are a “Bend but don’t break” kind of defense. Their coaching staff and roster are much the same as last year so the ever-important consistency factor is in favor for the Monarchs. Home field advantage is also important especially in European competition where the opposing team has to travel far. The Monarchs are coming of an “easy” win against the Crusaders of Amsterdam. It will be exciting to see if the Crusaders of Carlstad will be as easy.
