nfleurope.com/news/story/8509188lite national spotlight... saxat från nfleurope: Swedish national Joakim Holm found the spot light in a much different way. Last season while scouting the Nordic Championships I watched a big fullback for the Swedish team bleed yardage against the Finnish national team. We had Joakim on our radar screen from years past, but never really had seen enough of him to justify bringing him camp. At 27 years old we felt it was now or never for the big Swede, so the decision was made to bring him to camp. In November’s mini camp Joakim showed up in only so–so shape, in his defense it is hard to get much running done in the snowy conditions of his home town of Carlstadt, Sweden in November! What jumped out at you about Joakim was that he had good feet and outstanding hands catching the ball out of the backfield. In addition at 275 pounds he was a devastating blocker on the lead play. Believing that Rhein with its two-back offense would be a good fit for him, we allocated him to the Fire. Starting the season Joakim played only on special teams. Like Marvin, rather than getting down about it, Joakim kept a good attitude and worked each day on the practice field and in the weight room on the skills and techniques the coaches at Rhein wanted him to improve. Injuries hit the Galaxy hard this season and Joakim was traded down the Rhein to their bitter rivals in Frankfurt. I talked to Pete Kuharchek prior to losing Joakim, and he was disappointed because he felt the big fullback had a future and he was a great kid to have on your team. The first weeks at Frankfurt were a learning curve for Holm, who had to learn an entire new offensive system as well as a different terminology. By the time Week Eight came around and the Galaxy prepared to take on his former team, however, the Swede had himself ready to step in and make a contribution for his new employees. “Things are really getting better and better,” admits Holm. “I’m getting used to the speed and everything.” Step in and step up he did! Joakim’s one-yard touchdown catch of a Kevin Eakin pass was the kind of play we thought he could make. Frankfurt went to their goal line offense lining the 265-pound Swede at fullback. Holm slipped out of the backfield on a play-action pass and made a great over the shoulder reaching catch of Eakin’s pass. “About my performance last week, I got a shot and I just took it,” adds Holm. “It was a great play and great pass, but I am just glad to be able to help out my team.” The following day I was back in Helsinki, Finland for the Finnish national team testing date, and Joakim’s scoring grab was the hot topic of conversation amongst players, coaches and fans. All of Scandinavia it seems was proud to see one of their own performing at a high level on the big stage. Hopefully young athletes not only in Scandinavia but throughout the world will see that the types of plays Marvin and Joakim made in the biggest rivalry game in NFL Europe will inspire them to chase the dream of playing the greatest game in the world at the highest level possible.
